An Artistic Approach to Creating Environmental Awareness
The Sagrado Galleria is making visible the invisible impacts of environmental inequities.
Ambiente Public Arts creatively displays environmental quality data for community-based air quality awareness and education.
Ambiente Means:
Environment
This first pilot structure is connected to an air quality sensor. Our model – to house environmental quality sensors in public art pieces – can be duplicated across environmental data collections (i.e. soil, water, or extreme heat).
Air
The structure outside The Sagrado has an air quality sensor that is linked to a network of South Phoenix sensors installed by ASU. Through publicly accessible and localized data, we will connect people’s experiences to what is happening in the air around them.
Our Ambiente Public Art structure changes color based on the concentration of particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10).
Check out the sensor in real-time at https://openmap.clarity.io/ and search ‘South Phoenix.’
Atmosphere
These beautiful public art structures ground data in experience and reflection, becoming a visual reminder of how historical processes still lead to environmental injustices today.
Life
We will support local, community-based artists and businesses when building similar art pieces. The pilot structure was designed and fabricated by South Phoenix minority-owned businesses. This is a practice we intend to continue.
